What is a tarot spread, really?

A tarot spread is a fixed layout of card positions. Each position asks one question, and the card that falls there answers it. In a three card reading, for example, the first position asks about the past, the second about the present, and the third about where things are heading. Pull the same three cards in a different order and you get a different story — the layout is what gives the cards their grammar.

At Arcana Sky every reading is drawn fresh from the complete 78 card deck. Each card falls upright or reversed with an even chance, exactly as it might in your hands, and you step through the spread one position at a time so the story builds slowly. Meanings follow the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, the deck most readers learn on.

How a reading works here

Every spread on the site moves through the same three stages, so once you have learned one you know them all:

  • Shuffle and pick. All 78 cards lie face down. Shuffle as often as you like, then choose exactly as many cards as the spread needs — three for a three card reading, ten for a Celtic Cross.
  • Step through. Each card is revealed one at a time, with the position’s question and the card’s meaning in its actual orientation.
  • See the whole spread. Once every position is filled, the completed layout stays on screen — and the reading stays saved while you look cards up in the library.

Readings are drawn at random for reflection and entertainment. The cards do not decide anything for you — they give you something honest to think with.

Which spread should you choose?

When in doubt, let the question pick the spread:

  • One card is enough for a theme for the day (Daily Card) or a clear yes or no question (Yes or No).
  • Three cards suit any situation with a past, present and future — start with the classic Three Card spread, or use Situation · Action · Outcome when you need a practical next move.
  • Five cards are for people and work: Love & Relationship when the question is about a bond, Career & Money when it is about work or finances.
  • Seven cards paint a week or a year: the Week Ahead spread maps Monday to Sunday, and the Birthday Spread maps the year ahead around your birthday.
  • Ten cards — the Celtic Cross — is the deep dive. Choose it for a big, layered question that deserves every angle.

Reading your cards as a beginner

You do not need to memorise seventy-eight cards to read a spread. Start with three things: the orientation (upright cards carry the card’s classic energy; reversed cards usually soften, slow or invert it), the keywords (each card’s one-line essence, which every page in our card library leads with), and the position — the question the card is answering. A reversed Three of Swords in the “future” position is a different message from the same card in “the past”.

Then read the movement between the cards. Do the suits shift — fire cooling into water, air hardening into earth? Do the numbers climb or fall? Beginners often overthink single cards and underread the story they tell together. The story is the reading.
