How the moon's phases work

The Moon makes no light of its own. Half of it is always lit by the Sun and half of it is always dark, and the only thing that changes is how much of the lit half happens to be facing us. As the Moon travels round the Earth, that fraction grows and shrinks on a steady rhythm of roughly 29.5 days.

Astronomers describe the position with a single number, the angle between the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth. At 0 degrees the Moon sits between us and the Sun and its lit side is turned away, which is a new Moon. At 180 degrees the Moon is opposite the Sun in the sky and its visible face is lit, which is a full Moon. The quarters fall at 90 and 270 degrees, where approximately half the disc is bright. Everything else is a crescent or a gibbous shape somewhere in between.

This calculator uses Astronomy Engine to calculate the difference in the Sun's and Moon's ecliptic longitudes as seen from Earth. Its illumination calculation gives the fraction of the Moon's visible face lit by the Sun, and its lunar phase search finds the previous new moon and next full moon. Moon age is the elapsed time since that previous new moon. The phase label is assigned separately using the 8 sectors described below. The astronomical calculations do not establish the traditional meanings offered alongside them.

Why the birthday moon matters in the tradition

Astrology has always paid attention to the Sun, because the Sun gives us the star sign almost everybody knows. The Moon has an older and quieter place in the tradition. Where the Sun is read as a person's purpose and outward direction, the Moon is read as their inner weather: how they rest, how they react, how they recover, what they need when nobody is watching.

The phase adds something the Moon sign alone does not. Two people born a day apart can share a Moon sign and still have been born under different shapes of light, one growing and one shrinking, and the tradition reads that difference as a difference of rhythm. Growing light is associated with beginning, building and reaching. Shrinking light is associated with completing, releasing and passing on. A birthday moon is a way of asking which half of that cycle a person is naturally at home in.

It is worth saying plainly what this is and what it is not. The phase and illumination come from astronomical calculations. The meanings are tradition, offered here as a mirror to think with rather than as a statement of fact. Nothing on this page predicts your future, tells you what to do, or claims any scientific basis for a link between the sky on your birthday and your character. If a passage rings true, take it. • New Moon A New Moon birthday means the Moon and the Sun stood in the same part of the sky when you arrived, so the face turned towards Earth held no light at all.
• Waxing Crescent A Waxing Crescent birthday means the Moon had pulled a little way clear of the Sun and was showing a thin curve of light on its right side.
• First Quarter A First Quarter birthday means the Moon stood at a right angle to the Sun and showed exactly half a disc, lit on the right.
• Waxing Gibbous A Waxing Gibbous birthday means the Moon was more than half lit and still filling, a swelling disc with one soft shadowed edge.
• Full Moon A Full Moon birthday means the Moon stood opposite the Sun, with the whole visible face lit.
• Waning Gibbous A Waning Gibbous birthday means the Moon had passed full and was beginning to give its light back, still bright but with one edge already in shadow.
• Last Quarter A Last Quarter birthday means the Moon stood at a right angle to the Sun again, showing half a disc lit on the left.
• Waning Crescent A Waning Crescent birthday means the Moon had almost finished its round, a thin curve of light on the left with the dark of the month just ahead.

In astronomy, new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter mark specific moments. For its 8 descriptive labels, this calculator divides the cycle into equal sectors of 45 degrees centred on each named phase. Full Moon therefore covers a band extending 22.5 degrees either side of the exact full moon. The percentage lit is a separate calculation, so a Full Moon label does not necessarily mean 100% illumination. Other calculators may use different naming boundaries without disagreeing about the Moon's position.

Accuracy, time and time zones

The Moon changes shape slowly. Over a single day the lit fraction usually shifts by a few per cent, so for most birthdays the phase name is the same at breakfast as it is at midnight and a birth time makes no difference at all. That is why the time field here is optional and why leaving it blank is a perfectly good answer.

There are 2 situations where the time matters particularly. The first is a birthday near a boundary between the calculator's phase sectors, where the name can change over the course of an afternoon. The second is a birth in a time zone a long way from Greenwich, where a local evening can be the following day in universal time. Setting the offset you were born under handles both, and when your result is close to an edge the calculator says so instead of pretending to a precision it does not have.

We do not ask for a birthplace. Place matters a great deal for a full birth chart and for the houses, but for the phase of the Moon it changes nothing: the shape of the Moon is the same over London as it is over Lima at the same instant. The offset is all we need.
