What this spread is for

The birthday spread is a seven-card reading for your personal year — the twelve months running from one birthday to the next. It names the heart of the year, what you are leaving behind, what you are stepping into, the lesson, the gift, the challenge, and the guidance to carry through it.

When to use it

Draw it on or near your birthday, or at any point you want to take the measure of a year rather than a week. Some readers keep the result and return to it at the halfway mark to see which cards have started to make sense.

When to draw a birthday spread

Traditionally this reading is laid on the day itself, but the week either side works just as well. What matters is the intention: you are marking the turn of a personal year rather than asking about a single problem. Sit with it somewhere quiet, and give the first card a little longer than the rest — it colours everything that follows.

Reading the seven positions together

Cards two and three are a pair: what closes and what opens usually describe the same change from two sides. Cards four, five and six are the working year — the lesson, the strength and the pitfall — and they often argue with each other, which is the point.
