What this spread is for

Situation, action, outcome is the most direct three-card layout in tarot. The first card describes what is truly happening, stripped of the story you have been telling about it. The second names the move the cards point to. The third shows where that move leads if you make it.

The structure is deliberately narrow. Where the past-present-future spread explains, this one advises, and the middle card carries the weight: everything before it is context and everything after it is consequence.

When to use it

Choose it when you are stuck between options and want a nudge rather than an essay — a message to send or leave, a project to continue or close, a boundary to hold or soften. It is short enough to draw before a meeting and clear enough to act on afterwards.

It works less well for questions with no available action, such as waiting on someone else's decision. In those cases a reading about your own footing will serve you better than one about a move you cannot make.

The positions explained

This reading uses 3 positions. Each card is read in the light of the place it falls, so the same card can speak quite differently from one position to the next.

  1. The situation: What is really going on, underneath the story you are telling about it. This position names what you are actually dealing with.
  2. The action: The move the cards suggest you make. This position describes the move worth making next.
  3. The outcome: Where that action is likely to take you. This position shows where that choice is likely to land you.

When to use this spread

Use it when you are stuck between options, when a situation has gone circular, or when you want a reading you can act on in an afternoon. It is deliberately narrow — three cards, no detours — which makes it easier to read honestly than a large spread.

Reading the action card

The middle card is the point of the whole spread. Read it as a verb: The Hermit means withdraw and think, the Eight of Wands means move quickly, the Four of Swords means rest before deciding. Reversed, it usually means the same energy is being overdone or avoided.

If the outcome looks wrong
